The National Geographic Society's Chief Executive Officer, Jill Tiefenthaler, and Chairman, Jean Case, released the following statement after learning the news of Ash Carter's passing:

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of former Secretary of Defense Ash Carter, who was an incoming Trustee of the National Geographic Society. His decorated legacy as a public servant and his expertise in international affairs were extraordinary and had a significant impact on the world. Ash had a deep admiration for science, exploration and innovation and we know National Geographic would have benefited greatly from his perspective, guidance, and wisdom.
