Editor's note (June 2024): In 2021, the world’s leaders agreed to protect at least 30% of land and ocean by 2030. It is now up to individual countries to decide how and when they contribute to this global goal. At Pristine Seas, we collaborate with national governments and local communities to help them realize their national visions for ocean conservation. We are invited by governments to carry out scientific expeditions of specific areas that give them the information they need to establish marine protected areas (MPAs) in their waters. In Palau, National Geographic Pristine Seas identified areas of the ocean that are in the top 30% of importance to conserve — as a minimum to both protect marine biodiversity and enhance food provisioning. Our research shows that fully protected areas, which ban extractive activities, are best for economies, biodiversity and the climate. Koror, Palau (February 2, 2024)—National Geographic Pristine Seas returns to Palau to explore the diverse underwater ecosystem and contribute scientific data to the country’s ongoing marine spatial planning efforts. In collaboration with local educational institutions, high school students in Palau will participate in events hosted by Pristine Seas. Students will learn more about the incredible marine biodiversity that surrounds them and how scientists study vast underwater environments. “We, at Palau High School, are so excited and honored to be part of the Nat Geo expedition. The students will have the opportunity to meet and talk to the Scientists in our Ship tour and during the livestream classes where they will explain their work. Students will see the worksite and laboratory inside the ship and they can ask how they use equipment to gather data.
